Nico Rosberg ends 2015 F1 season with another win

By Ian Parkes
http://www.autosport.com

Nico Rosberg finished the 2015 season by completing the first victory hat-trick of his Formula 1 career, beating Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

It was a relatively comfortable lights-to-flag triumph at the Yas Marina circuit for Rosberg, who has been unstoppable since Hamilton won his third F1 title in October.

Rosberg has won every subsequent race, finishing another runner-up campaign with six successive pole positions in total, and a run of wins that took him to 14 overall and provided him with a lift ahead of the 2016 campaign.

Come the end of the 55 laps Rosberg finished 8.2 seconds ahead of Hamilton, who opted for a different race strategy in a bid to find a way past the German, only to fall short.

When Rosberg made his second stop on lap 31 of 55, Hamilton opted to stay out rather than pit on the following lap.

As Hamilton extended the life out of a set of soft Pirelli tyres there followed an exchange of messages between driver and the pitwall over to whether he could go to the end of the race.

With Rosberg closing rapidly, Hamilton eventually pitted for a second time after 41 laps, but rather than taking on super-softs - although he had no new sets left, only used - the switch was to softs, leaving him with a 12.5s deficit.

There was another brief surge, but ultimately it was a forlorn battle for Hamilton who had to settle for runner-up to Rosberg again.

Behind Mercedes' 12th one-two of the season - a new F1 record - Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen finished on the podium for only the third time this year, and for once ahead of team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who rose from 15th on the grid to fourth.

Force India duo Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg finished a strong fifth and seventh either side of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

Williams driver Felipe Massa was eighth, followed by Romain Grosjean in his final race for Lotus ahead of his move next year to Haas. The Frenchman used an alternative strategy and a late charge on super-softs to come through from 19th on the grid.

Daniil Kvyat completed the top 10 in his Red Bull, fending off Carlos Sainz Jr.

Incidents in a hectic first part of the race included a collision in the pitlane between Williams's Valtteri Bottas and McLaren's Jenson Button.

As Bottas was released - unsafely according to the stewards as he was penalised with a five-second time penalty - and as Button cut across into his pitbox, the Finn caught the rear of the Briton.

The incident resulted in damage to Button's rear wing, while Bottas sustained front-wing damage, leading to a long, slow lap back to the pits for a new nose.

That relegated Bottas to 18th at the time, with Fernando Alonso the only man behind as the two-time champion had required his own new front wing at the end of lap one in the wake of a first-corner crash with Pastor Maldonado's Lotus.

It was the ninth time this year Maldonado had retired, while Alonso's error incurred the wrath of the stewards as he was also penalised with a drive-through penalty for causing a collision.

Running around at the rear, and just before the midway point of the race, Alonso suggested he had had enough when he declared over the radio: "If we don't get a safety car I will retire the car".

The Spaniard, however, kept going to the flag, ending his worst season - in terms of points scored - since his 2001 debut with Minardi - down in 17th, with only Manor duo Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi behind him.

Nico Rosberg defeats Lewis Hamilton at Interlagos

By Lawrence Barretto
http://www.autosport.com

Nico Rosberg took his second successive Formula 1 victory as he comfortably led home Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Polesitter Rosberg came across on Hamilton as the duo approached the Senna S at the start, boldly defending his position to retain the lead and from then dictated the race from the front.

Newly-crowned champion Hamilton asked his team if it could tweak his strategy to give him a chance to beat Rosberg, but ultimately the Briton shadowed his team-mate on a three-stop and crossed the line 7.7 seconds adrift.

They had briefly been nose to tail in the second stint, before Hamilton fell away with heavier tyre wear.

Rosberg's fifth victory of the season secured second in the drivers' championship as his main rival for the position Sebastian Vettel could only finish third for Ferrari.

It was a largely processional race with a small threat of rain in the closing stages never materialising and Rosberg lapping everyone up to fourth place.

Ferrari was unable to challenge Mercedes. Vettel tried something different by running a second stint on the softs as most chose mediums but could not get closer and finished comfortably clear of two-stopping team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in third.

Williams's Valtteri Bottas made a brilliant getaway from his penalised seventh on the grid to squeeze past Daniil Kvyat and Nico Hulkenberg for fifth.

But that was as good as it got for the Finn, who stayed in that position for the remainder of the race and ensured his Williams team clinched third in the constructors' championship.

Hulkenberg crossed the line sixth, ahead of Kvyat and Felipe Massa, whose Williams team was summoned to the stewards after the race in relation to a tyre pressure and temperature discrepancy on the grid.

Romain Grosjean was ninth ahead of Max Verstappen, who made a series of passes in the final stint after choosing to run the soft.

It was Verstappen's sixth successive points-scoring finish, which is record run for a Toro Rosso driver.

It was a tougher day for his team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr, who had a problem on the grid and had to start from the pitlane before retiring on the first lap.

Pastor Maldonado, who ended up 11th, collided with Marcus Ericsson at the Senna S, tipping the Sauber into a spin and incurring a five-second penalty.

Daniel Ricciardo, running the updated Renault engine, was 12th, ahead of Felipe Nasr and McLaren duo Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso.

Ericsson, who lost five places on the first lap when he ran wide at the Descida do Lago, continued after the contact with Maldonado but lost too much ground and finished 17th.

The Manor-run Marussias of Will Stevens and Alexander Rossi, who will be replaced by Roberto Merhi for the final race in Abu Dhabi, completed the finishers in 18th and 19th respectively.

F1 - Mexican Grand Prix - Sunday, November 1st 2015

Nico Rosberg beats Lewis Hamilton to win F1 Mexican GP

Nico Rosberg took his first Formula 1 victory since June as he comfortably led home Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the first Mexican Grand Prix for 23 years.

The pole-sitter held off a challenge from Hamilton at the start and then dictated the race, surviving a late safety car period which cancelled out his lead to secure his fourth win of the season and 12th of his career.

Newly-crowned world champion Hamilton crossed the line second for his 15th podium in 17 races this season with Valtteri Bottas completing the podium.

Such was the pace of the two Mercedes that they were able to pit for a second time before the safety car came out and still rejoin in front of the rest of the field.

Hamilton questioned Mercedes' decision to bring him in, as he felt his tyres were in good shape, however his team insisted he had to pit for safety reasons, and he eventually relented.

The result means Rosberg reclaims second in the drivers' standings after Sebastian Vettel crashed out.
Vettel started third but collided with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo at the first corner and picked up a puncture.

The four-time champion complained about Ricciardo's driving on team radio but though the stewards investigated the incident, they deemed no further action was necessary.

Vettel recovered to the pits but he had a messy race, spinning at the esses and then crashing out of the race at the same spot when the rear end of the car got away from him - bringing out the safety car.

There was more drama for Ferrari when Kimi Raikkonen collided with Valtteri Bottas for the second time in three races following their last-lap clash in Sochi.

The duo went side-by-side into Turn 4 with Bottas' front-left hitting Raikkonen's right-rear and breaking the Ferrari's suspension.

Raikkonen retired instantly, signalling Ferrari's first double retirement since the 2006 Australian Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat finished fourth, after losing a place to Bottas on the restart, while Daniel Ricciardo and Felipe Massa completed the top six.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh, one place ahead of home favourite Sergio Perez, who received rapturous cheers throughout the grand prix and was the only driver who managed to only make one stop.

Max Verstappen and Romain Grosjean completed the top 10.

Pastor Maldonado missed out on his fourth consecutive points finish in 11th, with Marcus Ericsson, Carlos Sainz Jr, Jenson Button, Alexander Rossi and Will Stevens the other finishers.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso cited a lack of power just after the start and was told by the team to retire the car at the end of lap one.

Shortly before the restart Button radioed his team to say the brakes on Felipe Nasr's car were on fire and shortly after, the Sauber retired in the 55,000-seater stadium section, reporting his brakes were "finished".

Lewis Hamilton wins his third F1 world title in US Grand Prix
By Ian Parkes
http://www.autosport.com

Lewis Hamilton won his third Formula 1 world championship after claiming victory in a wild United States Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who finished 2.8s clear of Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg come the conclusion to an astonishing 56 laps, also becomes the first Briton to win back-to-back titles.

From second on the grid and on the run up the hill into Turn 1, Hamilton had the inside line, and not for the first time this year he forced Rosberg wide and off track after they had bumped wheels, relegating the German to fifth.

When Sauber's Felipe Nasr lost most of his front wing at Turn 1 on lap two after clipping the rear-left tyre of team-mate Marcus Ericsson - on the occasion of the team's 400th grand prix - debris at that corner led to the virtual safety car being called.

On the restart, Hamilton backed up those behind him to such a degree that once the racing resumed Rosberg soon passed Red Bull duo Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat.

Over the next few laps, on wearing intermediate tyres and on a circuit not quite ready for a switch to slicks, a titanic battle ensued between the leading quartet.

Ricciardo took the lead on lap 15 from Hamilton, with Rosberg through for second shortly after.

That forced Hamilton into the pits at the end of lap 18, taking on the softs, with the Briton setting the tone as the rest of the field followed him in either on that lap or the following one.

From fourth and second respectively, Hamilton and Rosberg made their way up to third and first with moves on Kvyat and Ricciardo, with the latter duo not as strong on slick rubber.

When Ericsson pulled his car out of the race at Turn 11 on lap 28, its positioning on the track brought the safety car out.

At that stage it wiped out a 10.6s lead for Rosberg over Hamilton, who had passed Ricciardo for second just before Ericsson's exit.

All bar the leading four - Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Kvyat - pitted for another change of tyres, with fifth-placed Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari taking on a new set of mediums in an attempt to get to the end without another stop.

Once the safety car departed after five laps, the German soon cleared Kvyat and Ricciardo to move up to third before another incident on lap 37.

This time it was Force India's Nico Hulkenberg retiring after running into the side of Ricciardo in a bid to claim fifth, leading to a second virtual safety car, under which Rosberg pitted, dropping to fourth, with Hamilton staying out.

Come lap 42, with Rosberg within six seconds of Hamilton, the safety car was deployed again when Kvyat lost his car on the approach to the final turn, sending him into a barrier.

That allowed Hamilton to make his second stop and come out behind Rosberg, whose hopes of extending the title race into Mexico next Sunday ended when he got out of shape at Turn 15 on the power and ran off track at Turn 16-17.

From there it was a smooth run to the finish for Hamilton, with Rosberg just holding off Vettel for second, followed by Toro Rosso's Max Vertsappen in fourth after a long final stint on his tyres.

Just 12 drivers saw the flag, with eight retiring through mechanical failure or after on-track incidents.

Lewis Hamilton dominates after Nico Rosberg retires

By Lawrence Barretto
http://www.autosport.com

Lewis Hamilton moved within touching distance of a third Formula 1 world championship by dominating the Russian Grand Prix after his Mercedes team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg retired.

Hamilton went side-by-side with polesitter Rosberg on the rundown to Turn 2 on the opening lap, but the German was able to keep the lead.

Then when the safety car was called into action for a first-lap collision between Nico Hulkenberg's spinning Force India and a helpless Marcus Ericsson, Rosberg encountered a problem with his throttle pedal.

The struggling German twice ran wide at Turn 2, allowing Hamilton to take the lead and then Williams's Valtteri Bottas into second.

Rosberg subsequently slowed, crawling back to the pits where he retired the car, to leave him 73 points behind championship leader Hamilton with only 100 still available.

Mercedes will have to wait until at least Austin to unpack its constructors' championship t-shirts as it failed to outscore Ferrari by the required three points.

It was Hamilton's 42nd career win, putting him one clear of three-time world champion Ayrton Senna and level with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel was second, moving above Rosberg into second in the drivers' standings, though if Hamilton outscores Vettel by nine points and Rosberg by two in America he will be champion.

Force India's Sergio Perez scored Force India's third-ever podium, after choosing to pit under a second safety car and running a long stint on the softs.

That safety car period had been caused when Romain Grosjean lost the rear end of his Lotus at Turn 3 and as he tried to corrected, the car wobbled the other way, sending him onto the marbles and into the barriers.

The Frenchman walked away from the incident, but admitted he would probably feel a little sore on Monday morning.

There was drama on the final lap, when Bottas passed Perez for third, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen following him through.

But Raikkonen then had a lunge at Turn 4, hitting Bottas at the apex and pushing the Williams into the barrier.

Raikkonen survived the damage to get to the finish in fifth, behind Williams's Felipe Massa who produced a superb recovery drive from 15th.

The stewards confirmed they would investigate the collision between Raikkonen and Bottas.

Daniil Kvyat finished sixth on home soil in the Red Bull ahead of Sauber's Felipe Nasr and Lotus's Pastor Maldonado.

McLaren scored points with both cars for the first time this season with Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso, celebrating his 250th grand prix weekend but 248th start, ninth and 10th respectively.

Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz Jr was on course for a superb points finish having started at the the back of the field after missing qualifying following a high-speed crash in final practice.

But the Spaniard appeared to suffer a brake problem, causing him to spin twice, once into the barriers, and then retire the car a few corners later with significant damage to the rear wing.

Team-mate Max Verstappen, who suffered a puncture on the first lap when clipped by the spinning Hulkenberg, 11th with Bottas classified 12th.

Ricciardo was on course to finish fourth, but pulled off track with six laps to go, suggesting something had broken on the suspension.

The Manor-run Marussias of Roberto Merhi and Will Stevens completed the list of finishers.

Lewis Hamilton beats Nico Rosberg after first-lap dice

By Ian Parkes
http://www.autosport.com

Lewis Hamilton took another significant stride towards his third Formula 1 world title with a comfortable Japanese Grand Prix victory after a close first-lap moment with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Following the anomaly of Mercedes' struggle for pace in Singapore, around Suzuka normal service was resumed as Hamilton led home Rosberg by 18.9 seconds, their eighth one-two of the year.

The win was Hamilton's 41st, equalling the haul of hero Ayrton Senna, and from his 162nd start, one more than the late three-time champion.

Hamilton is now 48 points clear of Rosberg with 125 available from the remaining five races, with Sebastian Vettel falling 59 points adrift after the Ferrari driver could only manage third.

The key moment came in the opening seconds, as Rosberg and Hamilton ran side by side through the first corners.

With the preferable inside line at Turn 2, Hamilton was able to edge Rosberg aside, leading to the latter running marginally off track, allowing Vettel and Williams's Valtteri Bottas to sweep by into second and third.

Aside from one complaint shortly before his second pitstop after 31 laps about "vibrations so big" that left him "struggling", Hamilton was never troubled through to the chequered flag.

Rosberg limited the damage to Hamilton by passing Bottas on lap 17 before the undercut worked on Vettel 13 laps later come the second round of stops.

Behind Vettel was team-mate Kimi Raikkonen as Ferrari made its own undercut work on Bottas who, from third on the grid at the start, had to settle for fifth.

Team-mate Felipe Massa's race was ruined inside the opening few hundred metres as the passing Daniel Ricciardo's left-rear tyre collided with his own front right.

Both men suffered punctures, with Massa also requiring a new front-wing due to damage sustained on the slow crawl back to the pits.

The Brazilian finished 17th and two laps down, with only Manor duo Alexander Rossi and Will Stevens and late retiree Felipe Nasr behind him.

Sergio Perez was also pitched off the road as the pack avoided the damaged Williams and Red Bull, but recovered to 12th after a pitstop for repairs.

Ricciardo was 15th and a lap adrift, a week after finishing second in Singapore.

Red Bull team-mate Daniil Kvyat - whose car was completely rebuilt following his heavy crash in qualifying, requiring a new chassis, power unit and gearbox - endured a frustrating race and multiple issues as he could only manage 13th.

From 13th on the grid, after serving a three-place penalty for causing a collision with Massa in Singapore, Nico Hulkenberg was a fine sixth in his Force India, gaining ground at the start and then jumping both Lotus drivers at the first stops.

Despite Lotus's ongoing financial woes, Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado were seventh and eighth, with Toro Rosso pair Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr rounding out the points scorers.
Verstappen had started 17th after serving his own three-place penalty for stopping in a potentially dangerous place in qualifying when his car suffered an electrical failure.

Sainz had his own moment in the race, hitting a bollard on the entry to the pitlane, forcing his pit crew into an unexpected front-wing change. He then lost out in a late battle with Verstappen.

As for McLaren, on Honda's home track, Fernando Alonso could have done no more to suggest he wants either a swift exit from his three-year contract or a dramatic rapid improvement.

Early on Alonso bemoaned his lack of pace, saying "it's embarrassing, very embarrassing", before later labelling Honda's V6 engine as "GP2" standard, followed by an exasperated cry of frustration.
Alonso eventually finished 11th, with Jenson Button 16th.

Sebastian Vettel wins Singapore GP as Lewis Hamilton retires

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole position as Formula 1 championship leader Lewis Hamilton retired with an engine problem.

Vettel led away from the start and negotiated one virtual safety car period and two full safety car deployments to secure his third win of the season and fourth in Singapore.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished second with the other Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium.

The second safety car reacted to a fan getting on the track, walking on the straight after the Anderson Bridge before climbing over the barriers.

Hamilton was running fourth when he reported a loss of power and though his Mercedes team spent several laps trying to find a solution, it decided to retire the car after the Briton dropped to 16th
.
It was Hamilton's first retirement in 20 races, and Mercedes' second engine problem in as many races following Nico Rosberg's fault at Monza.

Rosberg finished fourth, 14.2s adrift of Vettel, to cut Hamilton's lead to 41 points, with Vettel now just eight points further back in third place.

After a quiet opening stint of the race, and with Ricciardo starting to close on Vettel as the leader's pace dropped away, the virtual safety car was called into action when Felipe Massa and Nico Hulkenberg collided at Turn 3.

Massa had just pitted and was rejoining the track when he met with Hulkenberg at the apex, with the German spearing into the barriers.

The stewards deemed Hulkenberg was at fault and handed him a three-place grid drop for next weekend's Japanese GP.

Massa continued, but had to pit because of a puncture to his front-right tyre before he later retired having reported gearbox issues.

His Williams team-mate Valtteri Bottas survived a gearbox glitch in the closing stages to finish fifth, ahead of Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat who pitted before the virtual safety car and dropped out of contention for a podium as a result.

Force India's Sergio Perez was seventh, holding off Max Verstappen, who fought back after failing to get away from the grid.

Toro Rosso got him going again and though he was a lap down, he was hauled back into contention for points when he was able to unlap himself when the safety car was deployed.

Following the second round of stops, Verstappen found himself ninth and fought his way past Romain Grosjean to finish eighth.

His team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr lost several places when his car dropped into neutral, something that affected Massa and McLaren's Fernando Alonso too, but Sainz rescued points with ninth after also passing Grosjean.

Verstappen was told by his team to swap positions with Sainz on the final lap but did not do so.
Felipe Nasr scored the final point in the heavily-updated Sauber after a late pass on Grosjean with team-mate Marcus Ericsson 11th.

Pastor Maldonado's survived contact with Jenson Button to finish 12th with the other Lotus of Grosjean stopping before the end but classified as 13th.

It was a miserable day for McLaren, with Button and Alonso failing to finish.

The Manors were the last of the finishers with Alexander Rossi beating his team-mate Will Stevens to finish 14th on his Formula 1 debut.

Lewis Hamilton wins the 2015 Italian Grand Prix

By Lawrence Barretto
http://www.autosport.com

Lewis Hamilton secured his 40th career Formula 1 victory in the Italian Grand Prix despite late drama, as his team-mate and title rival Nico Rosberg retired in the closing stages.

The reigning world champion made a clean getaway to lead away from pole, while Rosberg slipped back to sixth, and front-row starter Kimi Raikkonen fell to the back of the field.

Hamilton dominated the race from there, but with a few laps remaining, he was told by his team that he needed to push without being given a reason for doing so.

Hamilton did as he was told and took the chequered flag with a 25-second lead over Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

After the race Mercedes was referred to the stewards because its tyres were measured below Pirelli's 19.5psi guideline on the grid just before the race.

Meanwhile, there was more drama for Mercedes as Rosberg's engine expired with a few laps to go when the German was running third and catching Vettel.

It was the first mechanical retirement for Mercedes this season and comes after Rosberg had to revert to an old engine, which had done six races, after an issue with his upgraded unit.

It means Hamilton, who secured his seventh win of the season, now leads Rosberg by 53 points in the championship with seven races remaining.

Williams' Felipe Massa inherited third, with team-mate Valtteri Bottas fourth and Raikkonen fifth after a strong recovery drive.

Force India's B-spec car continued to impress with Sergio Perez following up his fifth place finish at Spa with sixth at Monza, one place clear of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.

It moved the Silverstone-based team back ahead of Lotus into fifth place in the constructors' championship, after Lotus's race lasted just a couple of laps.

Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado both suffered contact at Turn 1, with Grosjean pulling off track and Maldonado recovering to the pits and parking the car in the garage.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo recovered from starting 19th after a 25-place grid penalty for changing engine elements to finish eighth with team-mate Daniil Kvyat 10th.

Sauber's Marcus Ericsson scored points for the third successive race with ninth.

Carlos Sainz Jr just missed out of points in 11th, one place head of Toro Rosso team-mate Max Verstappen, who started last and had to serve a drive-through penalty as punishment for his team releasing his car without its bodywork secure in qualifying, 12th.

Felipe Nasr was 13th for Sauber ahead of McLaren's Jenson Button, who made a blistering start to rise from 15th to ninth before dropping back.

The Manors of Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi brought up the rear with McLaren's Fernando Alonso retired with three laps to go.

Lewis Hamilton stretches F1 points lead with Spa win

By Lawrence Barretto
http://www.autosport.com

Lewis Hamilton beat Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg to victory in the Belgian Grand Prix to extend his Formula 1 world championship lead to 28 points.

The reigning F1 champion made a good getaway and then held off a fast-starting Sergio Perez in the Force India at Les Combes to lead.

Rosberg bogged down at the start, dropping to fifth, and though he recovered to second and started closing the gap to Hamilton, he was unable to get close enough to challenge.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was on course to complete the podium, after attempting a one-stop strategy that required a 29-lap stint on the mediums, but a right-rear tyre failure with a few laps to go ended his race.

That allowed Romain Grosjean, who had been hustling Vettel, to give Lotus its first podium of the season - a big boost amid an uncertain future and legal battles.

The start was initially aborted when Force India's Nico Hulkenberg encountered mechanical gremlins on the grid, waving his hands to signal he would be unable to get away.

The field went round for a second formation lap while Hulkenberg was pushed into the pits where he retired the car.

At the second time of asking, the field got away with Perez battling Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo into La Source and coming out on top to take second.

Red Bull ran its Monza-spec at Spa, which allowed Daniil Kvyat and Ricciardo to attack on the straights.

Kvyat charged to fourth after going out of sync on strategy, but last year's race winner Ricciardo was in contention for a podium, running third early on, before slowing and retiring on the exit of the Bus Stop. A brief virtual safety car was required while the Red Bull was retrieved.

Perez secured his best result of the season with fifth in the Force India ahead of Williams's Felipe Massa and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who rescued some points after starting 16th.

Max Verstappen tried a move on Raikkonen at Les Combes on the last lap but ran out of road and had to settle for eighth, ahead of Valtteri Bottas, whose race unravelled when Williams mistakenly fitted his car with three soft tyres and a medium, which earned him a drive-through penalty.

Sauber fitted the 2015-spec Ferrari engine to its cars for the first time this season with Marcus Ericsson benefiting from Vettel's late tyre failure to snatch the final point with 10th, one place ahead of team-mate Felipe Nasr.

Vettel was classified 12th for his first non-scoring finish of the season.

McLaren's Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso made brilliant getaways, on a weekend when drivers had to find their own clutch bite point under new rules.

Alonso climbed from 20th and last to 12th while Button rose from 19th to 14th, but duo struggled on the high-speed Spa circuit and finished 13th and 14th respectively.

Carlos Sainz Jr pulled into the pits after the formation lap, citing a loss of power, and though Toro Rosso managed to get him going, he retired with 11 laps to go.

Lotus's Pastor Maldonado was unable to take advantage of his top 10 start as he parked the car early in the race with a mechanical problem.

F1 - Hungarian Grand Prix - Sunday, July 26th 2015,

Sebastian Vettel wins thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix

http://www.autosport.com

Ferrari Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel took victory in a dramatic Hungarian Grand Prix, as Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg suffered their worst race of the season.

It was the German's first victory at the Hungaroring and second of the season, bringing his career tally to 41 to equal three-time world champion Ayrton Senna's mark.

It was also the first time since the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix, a run of 29 races, where Mercedes failed to score a podium finish with either car with Hamilton sixth and Rosberg eighth.

Hamilton was on course to lose his championship lead, first after running wide at the chicane on the first lap when he felt Rosberg crossed his line and then losing time when he pitted for a new wing and then having to a drive-through penalty after contact with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

But in defending second with a few laps to go, Rosberg clashed with Ricciardo at Turn 1, giving the Mercedes a puncture and damaging Ricciardo's front wing.

Rosberg was forced to pit and rejoined eighth, two places behind Hamilton who had fought his way back through the field to increase his championship lead to 21 points.

Hamilton and Rosberg both bogged down from the front row at the start, allowing Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen to get ahead, with Rosberg running third ahead of Hamilton.

Ferrari looked on course for its first one-two since the 2010 German Grand Prix before a MGU-K problem cost Raikkonen power. He eventually retired after the team were unable to fix it.

The virtual safety car was called into action when Nico Hulkenberg's Force India suffered a front wing failure, pitching the German head-on into the tyre barrier at Turn 1.

When it became clear there was too much debris on the track, the real safety car was sent out, bunching the field up to cost Vettel his sizeable lead - setting up a thrilling finale.

Daniil Kvyat scored a career-best second, to become the youngest driver to score a podium since Vettel in Italy 2008, the Russian benefitting from Ricciardo's clash with Rosberg late on.

Ricciardo survived the contact, which the stewards decided to take no further action on, with Rosberg to give Red Bull a double podium with third.

Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen, who had a drive-through penalty for making contact with Williams' Valtteri Bottas, battled his way up to a career-best fourth place.

The drama in the second-half of the race allowed Fernando Alonso to finish fifth, scoring McLaren-Honda's best result of the season, with Jenson Button finishing ninth.

Romain Grosjean was seventh in the Lotus while Marcus Ericsson gave Sauber an unlikely point with 10th, a few seconds clear of team-mate Felipe Nasr.

Williams failed to score for only the second time this season, with Massa - who was given a time-penalty for being out of position on the grid and forcing an aborted start - 12th and Bottas 13th.
