Hamilton claims record-breaking Hungarian win

http://www.planetf1.com

Lewis Hamilton set a new record for the most Hungarian GP victories, five, as he raced to the win on Sunday, setting it up with a great getaway off the line.

Although starts have been the Brit’s Achilles’ Heel this season, Hamilton pushed that aside as he match pole-sitter Nico Rosberg as the lights went out and held the inside line to take the lead.

He briefly gave up the lead to Rosberg when he pitted on lap 16. But with Rosberg in a lap later, Hamilton retook P1 by 1.5 seconds.

Swapping to the soft Pirellis and with the track temperature hovering in the early 50s, Hamilton struggled for pace compared to the chasers. He was told to “pick the pace up a little bit” and replied: “I’m working on it.”

He made his second stop on lap 41 swapping softs for softs, a move mimicked by Rosberg a lap later. This time Hamilton increased his advantage to 3.7s and it was a race to the line for the Mercedes team-mates.

Rosberg was assisted in his pursuit by Esteban Gutierrez, who was hit with a five-second time penalty for holding up Hamilton for half a lap. Hamilton responded with a personal best and raced to the victory by 1.9 seconds ahead of Rosberg. In doing so he also took the lead in the Drivers’ Championship by six points over his Mercedes partner.

Daniel Ricciardo tried to involve himself in the Mercedes battle as he not only briefly held P2 at the start, but he also closed in on them in the middle stint as his Red Bull coped better with the soft tyres.

But despite opting for an early second stop in the hope of leapfrogging either driver, he had to settle for third on the day.

Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen fought over fourth place with the Ferrari driver undercutting the Dutchman in the first round of pit stops to take the position.

Verstappen almost lost out to Kimi Raikkonen as well as the Finn, who ran a long first stint after starting on the soft tyres given his P14 on the grid, tried to pass on lap 55.

Verstappen hold the position, Raikkonen was left with a broken front wing.

He continued to harrass the Red Bull driver but was not able to make a pass, finishing P6.

Fernando Alonso was next in line ahead of Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas. Nico Hulkenberg claimed the final points-paying position as he benefitted from a spin for Jolyon Palmer that dropped the Renault rookie out of P10 and down to P13.

Meanwhile Jenson Button fell afoul of the radio ban, handed a drive-through penalty for unauthorised communication after he reported that the “pedal is stuck to the floor.” He was told “do not shift, we have lost hydraulic pressure” but was able to continue as McLaren fix the problem.

Button’s response to the penalty: “The brake pedal going to the floor isn’t classed as a safety issue? Interesting.” Button eventually retired on lap 63 with an oil leak, the first retirement of the grand prix.

Lewis Hamilton wins British GP, Nico Rosberg under investigation

By Lawrence Barretto

Lewis Hamilton took a comfortable victory in a rain-hit British Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes Formula 1 team-mate Nico Rosberg, who is being investigated for a breach of radio rules.

Reigning world champion Hamilton, who secured his third straight Silverstone win, crossed the line 6.9 seconds clear of Rosberg with Red Bull's Max Verstappen taking his second successive podium in third after splitting the Mercedes for much of the race.

Verstappen nearly grabbed second when Rosberg ran into late gearbox problems.

The German was told to shift quickly through seventh gear and given a line of advice on settings, messages the stewards will now investigate to see if Mercedes breached the restrictions on team radio.

The race started with six laps behind the safety car after a heavy shower, though it had stopped raining by the time the grand prix began.

Several drivers, led by Kimi Raikkonen in fifth, dived straight into the pits for intermediates when the safety car pulled in but Hamilton, Rosberg and Verstappen chose to stay out.

It proved to be smart decision as the virtual safety car was introduced when Pascal Wehrlein beached his Manor in the gravel, allowing the top three to pit and rejoin with a sizeable gap on the rest.

Verstappen coped with the drying track better than Rosberg, carrying far more speed through Becketts and then passing around the outside within the high-speed complex for second before pulling away.

Sebastian Vettel started the trend for dry tyres soon afterwards, with the top three maintaining the same order as they moved to slicks.

Hamilton and Verstappen were caught out by a puddle at Abbey, pitching them over the runoff and allowing the top three to close to within five seconds just past half-distance.

Rosberg was quicker than Verstappen as the track continued to dry and after complaining that the Red Bull driver moved too many times in defence, he eventually made a move stick to snatch second around the outside of Stowe.

Rosberg then closed on Hamilton, getting the gap down from eight to six seconds before the gearbox scare halted his chase.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth for the fifth time in 10 races this season, with mid-race Raikkonen fifth after a late pass on Sergio Perez - who had gained ground by staying out on wets as long as the leaders - into Stowe.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh, ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr and Vettel, who held onto ninth despite a five-second time penalty for forcing Felipe Massa off track at Village.

Raikkonen, Perez and Sainz all escaped excursions and spins at Abbey on the same slippery patch that caught out Hamilton and Verstappen.

Daniil Kvyat completed the top 10 to ensure Toro Rosso's fourth double-points finish of the season.

Massa missed out on points in 11th ahead of Jenson Button, who started 17th, and Fernando Alonso, who had a spectacular spin at Abbey and nudged the barrier before continuing.

Jolyon Palmer had a messy home race, with 10-second stop-go penalty after his Renault team released him in the pits without a right-rear tyre, and retired late on.

Rio Haryanto spun out at Abbey, tapping the barrier, while Kevin Magnussen, Romain Grosjean and Marcus Ericsson also failed to see the chequered flag.

Hamilton claims controversial Austrian win

http://www.planetf1.com

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg clashed on the final lap of the Austrian GP, handing the World Champ his first Red Bull Ring win ahead of Max Verstappen as Rosberg limped home.

The opening stint of the grand prix belonged solely to Hamilton, who ran his ultrasoft Pirellis through to lap 21 despite concerns over that rubber in the wake of qualifying.

Rosberg, meanwhile, pitted on lap 11 to swap his ultras for softs. Stopping early the German lost ground but it was positions he made up as those ahead pitted.

He was up into P1 on lap 27 when the Safety Car was brought out after Sebastian Vettel crashed on the start/finish straight. The Ferrari driver, who had yet to pit, had brought himself into contension only to suffer a rear left tyre failure, pitching the Birthday Boy into the barriers.

Rosberg immediately eeked out at lead at the restart, two seconds of Hamilton. But with tyres wearing the Brit pitted for another set of soft tyres for the final 16 laps of the grand prix.

Rosberg came in a lap later and swapped his worn tyres for supersofts. Hamilton questioned: “Why is he on a softer tyre than me?”

But despite being on the harder rubber, the Brit made inroads into Rosberg’s lead and joined his team-mate in passing Max Verstappen to run 1-2 with eight laps remaining.

Hamilton continued to close in on Rosberg and made his move on the final lap. Rosberg ran him wide at Turn 2 as the two touched and then touched again when Hamilton rejoined.

Rosberg suffered a front wing and could do nothing to stop Hamilton from racing to his first Austrian GP win.

Verstappen was second with Kimi Raikkonen completing the podium. Rosberg was fourth.

Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth ahead of Jenson Button, as both two-stopped, while Romain Grosjean was back inside the points for Haas despite a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

Carlos Sainz, Valtteri Bottas and Pascal Wehrlein, a first for the Manor driver, completed the points.

Daniil Kvyat was the first retirement as he stopped at Turn 1, Vettel crashed, Felipe Massa parked his Williams and Fernando Alonso pulled into the pits. Hulkenberg, who started well but dropped off as the race progressed, retired on lap 66. Sergio Perez crashed on the final lap.

Nico Rosberg rebuilds Formula 1 points lead with dominant Baku win.

By Lawrence Barretto

Nico Rosberg extended his world championship lead with a crushing victory in Formula 1's inaugural grand prix in Azerbaijan.

The German led into the first corner from pole and set about building a lead he would never relinquish, with his title rival and Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton only fifth.

It was Rosberg's fifth victory of the season and first since Russia, leaving him 24 points clear of Hamilton in the drivers' standings.

Hamilton made good progress through the field from 10th, having crashed out in qualifying, but then encountered lower than maximum electrical deployment.

The reigning world champion repeatedly asked Mercedes for help in solving the problem, but it was unable to tell him what to do under this season's radio communication restrictions.

Hamilton was able to fix the problem in the closing stages but it proved to be too late and he was unable to improve on fifth.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished second for the second successive race with Force India's Sergio Perez scoring his second podium in three races with third.

The Mexican passed Kimi Raikkonen on the final lap to snatch third, but he was set to get the place anyway as Raikkonen had been given a five-second time penalty for crossing the white line on pit entry earlier in the race.

Valtteri Bottas was a lonely sixth while Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen passed Nico Hulkenberg late on to finish seventh and eighth respectively.

The two Red Bulls did a two-stop strategy, fitting the softs and the the mediums, while Hulkenberg only did one so they had fresher tyres.

Hulkenberg held on to ninth, one place ahead of Felipe Massa, who scored points for the seventh time in eight races.

Jenson Button finished just outside the points in 11th but his McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso was told to pit and retire the car with seven laps to go.

Felipe Nasr scored his best result of the season with 12th, ahead of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, who started from the pitlane.

Pascal Wehrlein was running strongly when he suffered brake failure and retired his Manor for the first time this season.

The Toro Rossos were the only other retirements, both Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz Jr suffering suspension issues.
