Istanbul : MotoGP – Day One

Nicky Hayden lead a Honda charge with the fastest time of the first day of practice in Turkey, with a 1'53''623 lap of Istanbul putting him at the head of a five-rider group of riders for the Japanese factory.

Second position on the table was for Australian Casey Stoner, who suffered a late crash in the second session after heading the first, with Marco Melandri, Dani Pedrosa and Toni Elias. Colin Edwards came in sixth as the fastest non-Honda rider, with World Championship leader Loris Capirossi close behind. John Hopkins, Sete Gibernau and Makoto Tamada completed a top ten which was only split by eight tenths of a second.

Reining World Champion Valentino Rossi dropped to eleventh and went off the track during the session, whilst Australian Chris Vermeulen experienced another setback when his GSV-R had a technical problem in the final minutes.

Schu urges Ferrari to keep pushing

“It is a fact that we have made up a lot of ground but it is also true that we are not where we would like to be, even if this victory was a taster,” he said.

“We still have much work to do; the whole team agrees on this.
“Yesterday’s win is only the beginning.”

“Side issues do not help,” he said. “We have to continue working as hard as we have been.

“This is the only thing that has helped us reach our goals. It is incredible to see how the team manages to go on improving.

“Days like yesterday are especially important as they boost our motivation.
“This is good for our dream team, one that knows how to fight.”

Alonso: Ferrari not our only rival

“Michael for sure will be a contender and a big rival at the end of the championship, but he is not the only one,” said Alonso after finishing second in Sunday’s race.

“Both McLarens will be there and I hope [Giancarlo] Fisichella will be at the end fighting.

“It can be more than two or three drivers at the end of the championship.”
.
“We have to remember that Ferrari had a very bad season last year but here at Imola they were one second quicker than us,” he said.

“Imola is a quite different circuit so we will find out in the next two or three races who the quick cars are in 2006.”

Castroneves dominates in Japan

Helio Castroneves dominated the Indy Japan 300. Starting on the pole by virtue of leading the championship points, Castroneves would to lead 184 of the 200 laps.
“It was incredible,” said Castroneves. “The whole weekend long the car seemed to be handling very well. We decided not to touch much, and that seemed to be the key to making it better. The track seemed to come to us.”

Dan Wheldon continued to run strong for the Target Ganassi team, finishing second, but missing out on the chance to win three straight races in Japan.
“It's a good result, but it was a funny race for me,” said Wheldon who believed he was as fast as Castroneves, “at some times. “It's just so disappointing, with something so big at stake, where you could win three consecutive to kind of slip up is a shame, but at the end of the day whoever had the fastest car deserved the victory - so good for him.”

Michael Schumacher won the San Marino Grand Prix after withstanding the pressure from Championship leader Fernando Alonso in the second half of the race. While Schumacher took the chequered flag, it really was a case of a race lost for Renault as much as a race won for Ferrari. The result was Schumacher’s 85th Grand Prix success, the first competitive win since Suzuka 2004. "It feels so great to win again," said Schumacher. "At last we have done it and it is especially good after our last race when I crashed out in Melbourne - we all wanted to put that behind us. All the work has paid off and it is good to win again. Very good. It wasn't easy to win, but we had to keep a close eye on Fernando and keep him back behind us to win. This time it worked out."

Castroneves on Pole in Japanese washout

Motegi - Qualifying

Persistent rain has forced the Indy Racing League to cancel qualifications for the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit. Per IRL rules, the race will now start by entrant points, which places Helio Castroneves on the pole with Scott Dixon just to his outside.

IRL rules would normally call for the use of practice times but since yesterday's practice session was cut short for the second group, the unequal track time requires the use of entrant points. The last time qualifying was washed out for an IndyCar Series event was at Kentucky in 2005 with Danica Patrick earning the pole based on the practice speed rule.

The most recent race started by entrant points was at Texas in 2001, with Sam Hornish, Jr., leading the field to the green flag.Track drying operations continue with IRL officials hoping to get at least one practice completed this afternoon.

If the rains should return again, then practice will be held race morning. Current weather forecasts call for much improved conditions for Saturday, with race day temperatures in the low 60's and mostly sunny skies. The new schedule calls for practice to start at 2:30 this afternoon.

Fisichella to lead Renault team in 2007?

“I do not fear driving next to a seven time World Champion with equal equipment,” Fisichella told La Gazzetta dello Sport, “but I must admit that I would cooperate very gladly with Kovalainen.”
